Instructional Designer

The Stanford Center for Health Education (SCHE) extends world-class health education to a global network of health professionals, individuals, and communities, creating a more informed public and improving health outcomes in some of the world’s most vulnerable populations.  One of the Center’s programs is the Digital Medical Education International Collaborative (digitalmedic.stanford.edu), a growing global social impact initiative based out of Stanford Medicine that extends evidence based free health education resources to communities and frontline providers around the world. In light of the pandemic, Digital Medic has been active in creating and disseminating COVID-19 related health information globally and is a leader in mHealth and digital learning programs.  

SCHE is seeking an Instructional Designer to assess, design and develop learning solutions to support multimedia learning assets, including full online courses in health/medicine, short-form health education videos, and written training scripts optimized for interactive voice response. Content includes both training experiences for community health workers and other healthcare providers, as well as education videos and assets for the public/community.  

Core Duties:

  • Lead the learning design and implementation of health education content through an iterative, learner-centric approach, working with subject matter experts at Stanford, our internal production and evaluation teams, collaborator and government organizations in South Africa and globally.  

  • Conduct and facilitate needs finding interviews or human centered design workshops to directly incorporate the target learner experience into learning assets. May include some live teaching and facilitation for hybrid learning experiences.

  • Recommend learning solutions based on assessed needs with consideration of external factors and design appropriate, innovative and effective learning experiences for target learners at varying educational levels and global contexts.

  • Consult with subject matter experts to develop and write A/V scripts and learning experience blueprint/storyboards, learning objectives, and select appropriate production media and materials to achieve desired learning experience outcomes.

  • Provide creative vision, direction and design; determine overall themes for multi-faceted projects as well as individual design concepts.

  • Contribute to research and impact evaluation to continually iterate our approach and assess impact on knowledge retention; health behavior changes and outcomes.  

  • May include oversight of production schedules and budget.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in consulting with business partners and subject matter experts to assess learning needs and recommend high impact learning solutions and learning curricula.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in applying instructional design theory, models, and best practices.

  • Demonstrated proficiency using instructional design tools such as learning project plans, design documents, learning hierarchies, storyboards, prototypes, etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all members of a learning team, vendor partners, and business partners to create a learning environment that is service oriented, supportive, engaging and effective for adult and nontraditional learners.

  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience in industry standard tools such as authoring tools, digital, graphics media, audio, animation and video production tools to create impactful courses.

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate the effectiveness of learning materials.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to convey learning content clearly and succinctly in a manner that engages learners and improves learning retention rates.

  • Experience integrating online learning courses/certification programs with one or more learning management systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups and individuals at any and all levels of an organization.

  • Demonstrated skills in project management of learning development projects involving eLearning authoring, audio, video, and text production and post-production, including product evaluation and testing.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent 3 year tertiary education and seven years of relevant experience.

  • Desired experience in learning solutions for global audiences, low resource settings, multi-media production, and health/medicine courses.

Digital MEdiC is an initiative from the Stanford Center for Health Education (SCHE) where we work with local nongovernmental organizations, academic institutions, and government agencies to create engaging, easily adaptable health education content. We focus on high-need health issues affecting communities around the world. 

Our learning design and evaluation teams in California and Cape Town work together to create content for frontline health workers and the populations they serve. We collaborate with local stakeholders who disseminate the content, with the community members who consume it, and with researchers who help us improve and scale our impact.
