Mechanical Engineer II - Designing Friction Welding Machines!

This is not a remote position.  This position requires your onsite presence at our South Bend, IN location.

As a Lead Engineer for Manufacturing Technology Inc., based in South Bend, Indiana, you will take ownership for the design and engineering analysis of the company's large capital equipment as well as component specification, detailing and checking, when required.  Using your knowledge of the principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, materials combined with your analysis skills, you will actively seek new ways to improve upon the existing designs by creating detailed drawings for friction welding machinery, special tooling and ancillary equipment.  Leveraging your capital equipment design background and demonstrated experience working with mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic design documents, you will establish design requirements from customer specifications, which will allow you to generate concepts that get turned into detailed drawings in a 3D CAD environment.


•Prepares mechanical design, and detail drawings using 3D CAD and other engineering tools, laboratory equipment and engineering analysis software.

•Prepares detailed lists of parts, detail drawings, and materials (bills of materials) required to complete the project, as required.

•Reviews and closely follows customer specifications and requirements for machines, tooling and automation during manufacture of machines, tooling and automation.

•Continuously improves engineering processes.

•Helps develop strategies and processes to ensure on-time delivery of equipment, cost reduction opportunities and performance improvements.

•Good working knowledge of designing and specifying components for high-force machines and handling systems.

•Understanding of manufacturing environment, including machining processes, workflow, assembly processes, cycle time and quality and delivery expectations.

•Mentor and train junior engineers assigned by Assistant Chief Engineer during projects.

•May be involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and/or repair of mechanical products.

•May lead and direct the work of others.

•Perform other assignments, as requested by supervisor or manager.


  • Must have design experience on high-force equipment/heavy equipment
  • Must have 3 to 5 years’ experience with Machine Tool-type equipment
  • Must have excellent communication & leadership skills
  • Computer skills; SolidWorks (preferred), AutoCAD 2D, and Microsoft Office products
  • Must have an extensive background with 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks or similar 3D software
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and understand dimensional tolerances
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. permanently
  • Hydraulic circuit design
  • Hydraulic component hardware and specification
  • Ability to perform fluid and thermal analysis and sizing calculations
  • Background with PDM (Product Data Management) system (preferably SolidWorks PDM)
