Director, Development and Entrepreneurship

Under the general supervision of the Vice Chancellor of Development and Entrepreneurship or assigned manager, manages, supervises, and administers the daily operations of The San Diego Promise fund development program and/or entrepreneurship programs and participates in comprehensive development and entrepreneurship strategic initiatives led by the chancellor and vice chancellor. The Director holds key responsibilities in the planning, development, and implementation of a comprehensive strategic advancement program to establish and expand fundraising, gift giving, grants, community engagement, and related investments in College and District programs. This position is highly focused on major gifts and increasing donor stewardship.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents in this classification build, implement and manage the District’s resource development programs, particularly focused on the San Diego Promise Program, increasing donor (particularly major donor) investments, and working in conjunction with the San Diego Community College District Foundation staff. The Director has an opportunity to build a thriving development team and works cooperatively with College and District managers and external stakeholders to coordinate activities and programs with District Office and other College development offices and foundations. Incumbents are responsible for fostering and supporting a culture of philanthropy, entrepreneurship, and advocacy for College and District programs that provide supports for student persistence and success.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

  1. In collaboration with the Vice Chancellor of Development and Entrepreneurship or assigned manager, direct, plan, and organize activities in support of establishing strategic priorities, goals, and objectives for the development program within the District’s overall strategic plan for fund and grant development.
  2. Implement strategies to increase community awareness and support for the District’s programs, services, and activities; and to enhance the District’s profile for future investments, donations, and grant awards.
  3. Participate in all aspects of the donor cycle, including research, identification, establishment, and management of major and annual gifts, donations, investments, and related support for District programs and activities.
  4. Event planning, organizing, implementing, and follow-up.
  5. Build and maintain positive and sustainable relationships with organizations and individuals related to the development program.
  6. Oversee the San Diego Promise Program annual fund drive and ongoing fundraising efforts, including the implementation of progressing and innovative donor outreach campaigns.
  7. Build and maintain a donor/prospect database.
  8. Manage the implementation of select grants under the responsibility of the Office of Development and Entrepreneurship.
  9. Plan, organize, and host events, meetings, and introductory programs to engage philanthropic and grant supporters in College and District events. Provide campus tours, introduce and connect stakeholders, recognize significant contributions and outcomes, and increase awareness of the District’s development initiatives.
  10. Lead and support District grant application procedures, including collaborate with relevant District or College staff and offices to prepare and submit applications, assist with grant writing, measure progress and performance, support and implement compliance measures, and provide reports as needed.

Training and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree and five years of direct work experience in a leadership position with responsibility for resource development including annual, capital, and planned giving and event fundraising, grant seeking and writing, preferably with a non-profit 501©(3) organizational. Master’s Degree preferred.  Experience in higher education in the areas of grants development, fundraising, major donor campaigns, advancement and entrepreneurship is beneficial.  Possession of a fundraising professional certification (e.g. Advanced/Certified Fund-Raising Executive) preferred.  Bilingual is beneficial.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge:

  • Applicable sections of California Education Code and Title V.
  • Federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and codes related to foundations, development, and gift giving.
  • Principles and best practices for effective operation of a development program including gift giving, solicitation, stewardship, donor recognition, and program administration.
  • Local, regional, statewide and national trends and issues within higher education and the fundamental role of community colleges in higher education.
  • Professional and ethical standards and practices as administered by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Partnership for Philanthropic Planning, and Council on Resource Development.
  • Principles, concepts, operations, and processes in grant development and administration, accounting, auditing, budget development, and financial management.

  • Establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with individuals from diverse communities.
  • Maintain appropriate professionalism in stressful situations.
  • Understand, evaluate, and provide strategic input on the impact of proposed and enacted changes in laws, regulations, programs, guidelines, and effective practices impacting development activities, grants, and entrepreneurship objectives.
  • Provide training, professional development, and professional growth to assigned staff.
  • Conduct internal and external environment analyses to inform strategic planning processes.
  • Develop and implement effective development and entrepreneurship policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Define issues, analyze problems, evaluate options, develop sound conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and rules.

Training and Experience:

  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: a Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree beneficial but not required, and five years of direct work experience in a leadership position with responsibility for resource development including annual, capital, and planned giving and event fundraising, grant seeking and writing, preferably with a non-profit 501©(3) organizational.
  • Experience in higher education in the areas of grants development, fundraising, major donor campaigns, advancement and entrepreneurship is beneficial.
  • Possession of a fundraising professional certification (e.g. Advanced/Certified Fund-Raising Executive) is beneficial.

COMPENSATION

Range 6 ($10,725.84- $17,471.26) per month based on the 2024 Management Salary Schedule.  Initial salary placement is commensurate with related experience and promotional rules. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid: medical, dental, and vision plans; sick and vacation leave; and opportunities for professional development. Initial Salary Placement, Promoted or transferred employees will be placed as specified in the Management Employees Handbook and is non-negotiable.
This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. A temporary probationary period will be applied to the employee entering this assignment.
