This is a Monday-Friday, first-shift, hourly position.

As a Manufacturing Services Service Technician for MTI, based out of South Bend, IN, your primary mission will be to use your trouble shooting skills with MTI's state of the art joining and welding equipment to maintain and calibrate our machines at the Manufacturing Services division. Your superior skills with the diagnosis and repair of electronics systems are absolutely central to the job.  Additional experience with mechanical, pneumatics, hydraulics or robotic systems will really make you a top candidate. Working knowledge of ladder logic, Allen Bradly or Siemens PLCs would be a great asset to your credentials.  You will also be able to travel up to 20% of the time with occasional on site customer visits to our machines in the field.  Bring the above technical skills, your ability to read blueprints and schematics and a willingness to learn and grow and be positioned for success within a company that will provide extensive training and cares about what you have to contribute. 

The ideal candidate for this position will have experience in a manufacturing environment and know how to setup and operate machinery. They will demonstrate strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, be familiar with reading and interpreting part prints, have aptitude for use of hand tools, and be reliable and attentive to quality demands.

This position may, on occasion, require travel in order to support the Field Service team both domestically and internationally.

Experience driving a forklift, using manual or CNC lathes, surface grinders, and mills would be preferred, but not necessary.

Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  1.     Must be able to work with minimal supervision. Able to perform general maintenance from a pre-determined frequency and/or situation arising from known cause.
  2.     Repair and Maintain MS friction welding machines as well as other industrial equipment such as lathes, furnaces, saws and mills.
  3.     Dismantle defective machines and install new or repaired parts, following specifications and blueprints, using precision measuring instruments and hand tools.
  4.     Work closely with Manufacturing Services team to diagnose and repair machines.
  5.     Install and repair electrical apparatus, such as wiring and electrical/electronic components of machines.
  6.     Install machinery and equipment according to blueprints and other specifications.
  7.     Lay out, assemble, install and maintain hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, and repair/replace gauges, valves, pressure regulators and related components.
    1. Monitor consumables and reorder as necessary (air filters, grease, filters, fittings, thermocouples)
  8.     Install, program or repair automated machinery and equipment, such as flash turn off, programmable controllers, conveyors, robots, etc.
  9.     Apply trouble shooting expertise utilizing visual inspection, listening for unusual sounds to determine machine malfunctions as well as discussing machine operation and variation with customer personnel.
  10.     Provide instruction to Manufacturing Services personnel to operate MTI machines and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  11.     Perform and review time compliant system accuracy tests and temperature uniformity surveys for MS furnaces and complete required documentation.
  12.     Participate in MS Customer Audits as required.
  13.     Perform required safety inspections including forklifts and hoists.
  14.     Monitor and schedule with appropriate vendors the removal of hazardous materials.
  15.     Participate in MS Safety Team to receive information regarding the maintenance and repair of facility / equipment presenting safety hazards.
  16.     Ensure accurate and timely documentation for expense reports, working hours, service reports and machine acceptance documents.
  17.     Perform other assignments, as requested by supervisor or manager
  18.     Advise and recommend future technical and/or operational direction and process improvements as related to this function.

Required Skills and Competencies

  1.     Demonstrate above-average troubleshooting skills.
  2.     Expertise in working with Hydraulic, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical and Pneumatic equipment and systems.
  3.     Ability to learn and comply with Aerospace metallurgy standards
  4.     Exhibit expertise in machine ladder logic and PLC programming.
  5.     Possess the will to travel extensively throughout the US and the world, as required.
  6.     Exhibit diplomatic expertise and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  7.     Expert-level proficiency with Microsoft Office suite: Excel, Word, Outlook, etc
  8.     Must conduct oneself with the highest level of professional and ethical standards.
  9.     Ability to work without direct supervision

Physical Requirements

  1.     Ability to perform general office –related activities
  2.     Frequently required to sit. Is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  3.     Use hands for purpose of keyboarding
  4.     Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds
  5.     Ability to travel domestically and internationally
  6.     Ability to function in a manufacturing environment

Required Education and/or Experience

  1.     High School Diploma with extensive technical experience/training/certifications.
  2.     Proven success in maintaining large machines/equipment.
